water babyTips for New Swimmers

• Start by making bath time fun with toys and songs and get your child used to having water splashed gently on their face and body.

• Progress to pouring a small amount of water over the top of your childs head and over their face to encourage their breath holding skills.

• Get them used to the feel of floating on their back in the bath water with your hands supporting their neck and body.

• Try to make sure your child isn’t too tired to swim. If the lesson doesn’t fit in with their usual routine, an early snack followed by a nap in the car on the way to swimming can help and don’t be surprised if they are extra-sleepy and extra-hungry after their lesson!

• Leave 1-2 hours after a feed to allow time for digestion and to help avoid any accidents during the swimming lesson.

• Try to arrive at least 15 minutes before your lesson so you have time to get yourselves changed and be ready on poolside before the session starts.

• Changing facilities can be small so please try to bring as little equipment as possible.

• Please shower yourself and your child before entering the pool to help keep the water clean.

• We insist on a Double Nappy system to help avoid any accidents in the pool. This means a disposable nappy under a Splashabout Happy Nappy, which is the best fit around the legs and tummy. Click here to order a Happy Nappy from us.

• Our pools are warm but if your child gets very cold or you decide take them swimming in a colder pool, they may be happier in a baby snug or wetsuit which you can order from us – click here for more details.

• If your child has eczema, you can apply a barrier cream to affected areas and then put them in a special eczema swim suit – please click here for more details.

• We have a small supply of swim goggles for parents so that you can see your child whilst underwater but you may want to bring your own if you have some.

• A hooded towelling robe is useful to wrap your child up in to keep them warm and dry whilst you get changed, and a change mat is essential for babies. See splishsplashsplosh.com for some great character robes for parents and children !

• Your child may be particularly hungry after a swim session so it can be handy to have a snack and a drink with you (but only after you have left the changing rooms please!)

• Please take all used nappies away with you unless there are specially marked bins suitable for nappy disposal.

• Make sure you dry your little ones ears very carefully and you might want to bring a hat to keep their ears warm on the journey home.
